White temple, black house

Chiang Rai is located to the north of Chiang Mai, a few hours drive away. We went there to visit to opposing sites, which were strangely complementary…

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is a Buddhist temple whose construction began only in 1997. Still under construction, it won’t be completed until the year 2070. The design is markedly different from traditional temples. The hordes of tourists present on the day of our visit took away a bit of its charm, but it was still quite a contrast with…

The Black House (Baan Si Dum), is a museum founded by celebrated Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. It’s a bizarre collection of buildings, works of art, and collectibles. Very dark, to the point of being sinister, with loads of animal horns and skins, the site gives of a very Gothic ambiance. At the time of our visit, a group of young boys were giving a song and dance show inside the main building, which added to the strange atmosphere. Definitely worth the detour, however!
